Frying at the Campsite
You CAN fry on your campstove, and these tasty fry breads — sopapillas — are minimal ingredients, quick to make, and delicious for breakfast or around the campfire with honey and (maybe?) bourbon.
Ingredients (Serves 4):
- Sweet pizza dough (Make ahead; here’s our recipe)
- Cooking oil (4 cups or about half the depth of your medium pan)
- 1/4 cup of flour
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- honey and/or jam to compliment
Use a small dusting of flour on your surface to keep the dough from sticking. Roll a softball size ball of dough out on a floured cutting board to about the thickness of the credit cards. Cut into small(ish) triangles.
Heat oil to medium heat (250 to 300 degrees) and keep a constant temperature for the frying.
Fry the triangles to a golden brown, turning once or twice.
Let cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar. To enjoy, bite off a corner and then fill with a squirt of honey or 1/2 teaspoon of jam.
